Urban Delight: Narrenturm

One of the most interesting but not very well known building in Vienna, Austria. The Narrenturm (Tower of Fools).

It was built by Josef Gerl in 1784. Emperor Joseph II had it build. It is a circular building with 5 floors and 28 rooms each. The building was the first one in the world, that was built to keep mentally ill people. Mentally ill people were recognised as being ill and not to be possessed by the devil. But it still was a long way to modern psychiatric care.

There were 139 single cells. Each cell is about 13 square meter. It was in use till 1866. After that date, the building was used as an archive and to accommodate nurses. Since 1971 you find the Pathologic-Anatomical Museums there. It is located in the area of the old general hospital in Vienna.

The government of Austria and also the local government of Vienna, do not understand the historic significants of this building. There is no money for its restoration.

Kaiser Joseph II hat es von Josef Gerl, 1784, erbauen lassen. Es ist ein rundes Gebäude mit 5 Stockwerken und je 28 Zimmer. Der Narrenturm war weltweit das erste Gebäude, dass ausschliesslich für geisteskranke Personen errichtet wurde. Hier wurden erstmals diese Leute als krank angesehen und nicht vom Teufel besessen. Trotzdem war es noch ein langer Weg bis zur modernen Psychiatrie. Es gab 139 Einzelzellen. Jede war 13 qm gross. Bis 1866 wurde es genützt. Danach wurde es als Archiv und als Schwesternwohnheim genützt. Seit 1971 ist das Pathologisch-anatomische Bundesmuseum dort untergebracht.

Dem Bund und der Stadt Wien ist die Bedeutung dieses Gebäudes leider nicht bewusst und so ist es einem langsamen aber sicheren verfall ausgesetzt. Es gibt kein Geld.
